Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2014

Right before Thanksgiving, we shared PPG Paints’ Color of the Year with you, and now we’re pleased to report that Pantone has released their 2014 Color of the Year! According to Pantone, the ultimate authority in color, Radiant Orchid will be a huge hit for 2014.

While Radiant Orchid, with it’s warm purply tones, is vastly different from PPG’s Color of the Year, I found a lot of similarities in the symbolism each color held for next year. Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, describes Radiant Orchid as a color that draws you in and speaks to creativity. It sits strongly in the purple family, but its warm pink undertones bring it a surprising versatility. It appeals to a variety of people with its enchanting quality, and gives an air of uniqueness. It has a rich, undeniable charm. Pantone shares its fascination with the color: “An invitation to innovation, modern and versatile Radiant Orchid encourages creativity and originality. Imbued with a harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and its rosy undertones emanate great joy, love and health.”

In those last words, I heard the echo of PPG’s Color Trend report. While PPG’s buttercream yellow is more calming and neutral than Radiant Orchid, the Color Trends repeat similar phrases to those used to describe Pantone’s color. One seems to find hints of energy, creativity, and innovation in each report for 2014. Bold colors and soft pastels are back – a trend that’s proven to hold even among the differences in different Color of the Year proclamations.
